That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Rotobrush Register & Grille Cleaning: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

If your Rotobrush system isn’t pulling the way it did when you first unboxed it, the register and grille cleaning attachment is usually the first thing to check. We stock Rotobrush-compatible register and grille cleaning heads and brushes for most residential models, with installed pricing in Los Angeles typically running $145 to $285 depending on which iteration of the head your system uses. Most swaps are done in under an hour at your home, and we carry the common wear parts on the truck so we’re not scheduling a second trip because we had to order a brush.

The way owners usually find us is the same story every time: the attachment spins at half speed, or it chatters against the register face, or the bristles have gone flat and stopped agitating the dust line. You can hear it before you see it. One day the tool just isn’t doing what it did last season. That’s the sign to replace the head instead of pressing harder, because a worn register attachment will score the metal on your grilles and leave a mess that takes longer to fix than the part swap itself.

Which Rotobrush Models This Applies To

Rotobrush has changed their register and grille head design a few times over the years, so the first step is identifying which version you have. The older sd$ and early AI models used a screw-on brush collar with a fixed bristle ring, while the newer models switched to a quick-release head with a softer, denser bristle pattern that is easier on powder-coated grilles. If you lift the head off and look at the base, you will see a stamped model number on the aluminum collar. That number is what tells us which replacement is correct, and it saves everyone time if you have it when you call.

OEM Rotobrush replacement heads are still available for most models made in the last fifteen years, but we also stock aftermarket heads from brands we have run on our own equipment. The aftermarket brushes are usually within ten to fifteen dollars of OEM pricing and often outlast the original bristle pattern in Los Angeles because they hold up better to drywall dust, which is abrasive and kills brush fibers faster than general household lint. If your system is older and Rotobrush has discontinued the exact head, an aftermarket equivalent is frequently the only realistic option, and we will tell you that plainly before we order anything. Hollis Air Duct Cleaning is an independent service provider and not an authorized Rotobrush distributor, which means we have no incentive to sell you a brand name when a better part costs less.

Signs Your Rotobrush Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing

  • The head chatters or hops on the register face. The bristle ring has worn unevenly, which throws the head off balance. Pressing harder makes it worse, not better, and can bend the aluminum backing plate.
  • Bristles are flat, splayed, or missing in patches. Natural bristle and nylon both lose their stiffness after enough passes through a household with hard water minerals and construction dust. Once the ends curl, the head is done agitating and starts smearing instead of scrubbing.
  • The quick-release collar sticks or won’t seat fully. The spring detent inside the collar gets packed with fine dust over time, then the head wobbles on the drive shaft because it isn’t locked square. A wobbly head is a worn-shaft problem if you ignore it long enough.
  • Slower rotation speed through the whole system, not just at the register. If the brush head is binding internally, the motor draws more current and the whole tool bogs down. A stiff head left on the machine shortens the life of the drive motor, which is a far more expensive repair.
  • Visible scoring or scratches on the grille face. The outer guide ring is supposed to ride smooth. When the felt or rubber wear ring disappears, bare metal contacts the register. That’s the point where a forty-dollar brush head costs you a repainted or replaced vent cover.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Los Angeles, a Rotobrush register and grille cleaning head replacement runs $145 to $285 installed, parts and labor included. The spread comes down to which version your system takes: the older fixed-collar brushes sit at the lower end, the newer quick-release heads with denser bristles at the upper end, and aftermarket options usually land somewhere in the middle.

  • OEM Rotobrush replacement head: $95-$165 (part only, depending on model)
  • Aftermarket equivalent head: $75-$140 (part only, comparable or better bristle life)
  • Labor for the swap: $50-$70 (most jobs take well under an hour)
  • Drive shaft inspection and collar cleaning: included with the replacement, not a separate line item

Written price before we touch anything. If the head fails within a year, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right at no charge, including a second visit if the replacement was defective. You will know the number before we start, and it will not move at the door.

DIY or Call Us?

This is a low-risk part to owner-check, and you do not need a technician to tell you the bristles are done. Pull the head off, look at the collar, check for flat spots on the brush, and run your thumb over the wear ring. If the ring is gone or the bristles won’t stand back up, it’s shot. What we would not recommend is buying a head online without confirming the collar size, because Rotobrush used two different shaft diameters across model years and the wrong one will spin but will not clean, or will not spin at all.

There is no real safety danger in changing the head itself on most models, but if you are not sure which generation your system is, call us at (361) 326-5060 and describe the stamped number on the collar. We will tell you over the phone whether it is a match or a gamble. If we come out, the estimate is free and the price is written before we open the tool case.
